Satellite and car radio, explained without the handbook

Everything below is what we end up saying on the phone. It is free to read, there is nothing to sign up for, and it applies whether or not you bought anything from us.

What satellite radio actually is

Ordinary radio is line of sight from a mast a few dozen miles away. Satellite radio is a signal sent down from spacecraft in high orbit and, in built-up areas, repeated by ground transmitters that fill in the gaps where a building blocks the sky. Because the source is above you rather than beside you, the rules for getting a clean signal are different, and almost every practical decision below follows from that one fact.

It means an aerial wants sky, not height. A puck on a car roof with nothing above it outperforms an expensive aerial on a parcel shelf under a heated rear screen, every time. It also means a multi-storey car park, a metal-roofed workshop and a tunnel will all drop the signal, and that this is normal rather than a fault.

Does my vehicle already have a receiver

Check the source or band button before you buy anything. If pressing it repeatedly cycles through FM, AM, Bluetooth and then something like SAT, XM or SIRIUS, the tuner is already there and you do not need hardware from us at all — you need a plan from the provider.

If the source list stops at Bluetooth or USB, there is no tuner and adding one is a hardware job. Look at the roof next: a small puck or a fin that is not the AM/FM mast suggests a factory aerial is already run, which saves the most tedious part of a fit.

Trim level decides it, not the model year. Two identical-looking cars from the same year can differ, because the tuner was frequently bundled into a premium audio package rather than fitted across the range. This is the single most common reason people buy the wrong part.

Finding the receiver identifier

Every receiver carries an identifier that the provider uses to attach a plan. It is not your account number and it is not the vehicle VIN. Where to look depends on the hardware:

  • Factory-fitted tuner — usually under a menu called Satellite, SAT Settings or Channel 0. Tuning to channel 0 on a great many systems displays it directly.
  • Our SR-120 — hold MENU for three seconds.
  • Our SR-220 — Settings, then Receiver ID.
  • Older portable units — frequently only on a printed label under the battery or on the chassis underside.

Identifiers never contain the letters I, O, S or F, because those are too easily confused with 1, 0, 5 and E when read aloud. If you have written down an O, it is a zero.

Where the aerial goes, and why it matters most

Centre of the roof, nothing above it, at least 150 mm from any other aerial, roof rail or roof box. That is the whole rule, and following it will resolve more complaints than any other single action.

Things that block the signal and surprise people: a roof box, a bike carrier, a heated windscreen element (which is a fine metal grid), aftermarket tinting containing metal, and a panoramic glass roof with a solar-reflective coating. A magnet base also needs steel to hold onto — on an aluminium, composite or full-glass roof you need the adhesive bracket instead.

Route the lead down a pillar and under the trim rather than across the roof lining, and keep it away from the alternator loom and from any inverter. Coax is shielded, but it is not immune, and a whine that changes with engine speed is nearly always a lead that has been run alongside something noisy.

Power: three ways, in order of preference

Hard-wired to a fuse tap. Tidiest and most reliable. An add-a-circuit tap sits in an existing fuse position, carries the original circuit through untouched, and adds yours on its own fuse. Nothing is cut and the vehicle returns to standard by pulling one part.

Behind the head unit. Sensible if the dash is already apart for the fit, since switched live, permanent live and earth are all present on the factory plug.

Cigarette socket. Works, and it means a lead across the console and a receiver that dies when someone unplugs it to charge a phone. Fine as a temporary arrangement, poor as a permanent one.

If the vehicle is 24 V — most light trucks and some vans — you need a regulated supply. Putting 24 V into a receiver expecting 12 V destroys it, and it is not covered by any warranty.

Getting the audio into your stereo

Four routes, best first. Direct dash mount: the receiver replaces or joins the head unit and drives the speakers itself. Aux input: a 3.5 mm lead into the stereo’s own socket, if it has one. FM direct injection: the receiver is spliced into the aerial feed and appears on a clear frequency — unlike a plug-in FM transmitter, it does not broadcast into the street, so it does not pick up interference. Bluetooth: for vehicles with BT audio and nothing else.

Avoid the cheap FM transmitters that plug into a cigarette socket and broadcast over the air. They are legal and they are also the reason a lot of people conclude satellite radio sounds poor. It does not; the transmitter does.

Reading a weak-signal message

A receiver reporting no signal is describing a geometry problem in almost every case. Work through it in this order, because the order is roughly the order of likelihood:

  1. Are you under something — a car park, a canopy, a workshop roof, dense trees?
  2. Is the aerial where it should be, with clear sky above it?
  3. Is the lead seated at both ends? An SMB connector that is nearly home looks identical to one that is home.
  4. Has the lead been crushed by a trim panel or a seat runner? Look for a flat spot.
  5. Only now consider the aerial or the receiver itself.

A signal that drops out rhythmically as you drive under lampposts or a bridge line is working correctly. A signal that is fine parked and gone at speed is usually a magnet base that has moved.

We sell and fit hardware. We do not sell, activate, renew, change or cancel any broadcast subscription, and we do not take payments or issue refunds on any provider’s behalf. A plan is bought from the service provider directly, and where that is what you need we will say so and point you back to them.

We never perform account or password recovery, and we will never ask you for a password, a one-time code or full card details. If anyone claiming to be us asks for those, they are not us.
